I just installed this yesterday (http://justoutsideboston.wordpress.com/2006/12/18/laptop-desk-for-my-car/) and haven't had anyone in the car with me yet. So, I can't be sure of the comfort. If it's too crowded I can remove the laptop desk. The two joints that provide angle and swivel adjustment can also be unscrewed to easily remove the desk.
