How to Setup a VPN Server Using a DD-WRT Router

DD-WRT Configuration

Before setting up the VPN Server, you must first make sure your installed build of DD-WRT includes the PPTP VPN features. The DD-WRT feature list shows this as “PPTP / PPTP Client” on their chart. Check the installed version on your router (which you can see in the upper right corner on the configuration pages) against the chart. If the feature is not included in your build, you will need to flash your router with a DD-WRT version which does include the “PPTP / PPTP Client”.

To turn on the PPTP VPN Server, navigate to the Services tab and then the VPN sub-tab and select the option to enable the PPTP Server.

Once enabled, several previously hidden options will appear. Configure them as follows:

  • Server IP: Public IP address of the router
  • Client IP(s): List of local IP’s (respective to the VPN network) to use when assigning IP addresses to clients connecting through the VPN. In our example, we are setting aside 5 IP addresses (192.168.16.5, .6, .7, .8, .9) for use by the VPN clients.
  • CHAP-Secrets: User name and passwords for VPN authentication. The format is “user * password *” (user[space]*[space]password[space]*), with each entry on its own line. In our example, there is just a single accepted user name (jfaulkner) and password (SecretPassword1).

Create and upload a torrent on TPB using µTorrent

(1) Preparation

So first off we’ll need to create two new folders somewhere on your computer, for this example I’m using my Data drive D.The first we’ll call ‘info’.
We’ll be storing 3 files in the ‘info’ folder :

  • a TXT file,
  • a picture,
  • and the .torrent that we will create in section (2).

The second folder will contain the files you wish to share with the world.
Give it a title representing the content.
We’ll need it for section (2) ‘Creating the .torrent’.

Example :

1.1 The torrent description in a TXT file
Why? For three reasons:
a) TPB captcha times out after approximately 90 seconds, so we’re better off copy/pasting a description previously written than typing hastily the text while uploading.
b) At the time of writing this tutorial, the edit and delete torrent functions are disabled.
It is important to have your text exactly as you wish it to be seen on TPB before you upload.
c) It’s always handy to have your description backed up in case you want to post your torrent on another site as well as TPB.

1.2 A picture in .jpg or .png
Why?
Although it’s not compulsory, it will improve your torrent presentation and allows room for some more visual information.
TPB implemented its own image hosting site for that purpose, bayimg.

1.3 .torrent file
We haven’t got it yet, but we will in section (2).
Why?
We need it to share our files with others.
TPB hosts and indexes .torrent files (URLs of trackers and metadata about the pieces), the actual content is in people’s computer’s hard drives.

How to enable “God Mode” in Windows 7

This is basically an advanced control panel for Windows 7. Heres a neat Windows 7 trick thats been doing the rounds on the Internet. It enables GodMode, a term devised by the Microsoft development team, which provides a single place to access all Windows settings without needing to browse options and folders in the Control Panel.

To enable Windows 7 “God Mode”….

1. Create a new folder.

2. Rename the folder to:

God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

(note that you can change the “God Mode” text, but the following period and code number are essential).
